Tournaments…The Down Side
Tournaments…The Down Side
Dear Fellow Hackers. In response to the upcoming Tourney schedule for Jobbing.com arena later this month I have had several conversations this past week with many of you as to why I am not promoting it or supporting it. I have explained my position to a few of you and almost everyone of you has encouraged me to share this with the entire club since most of you had no idea how events like this can hurt our club and of course my business personally.
I know this is long but please read through it and I think you’ll understand my position.
- For those of you who enjoy Hacker and believe in what I have been doing for the past 11 years, consider this… To make Hacker work I’ve had to commit to doing this full time. There have been enough other guys who have in the past and will in the future try and duplicate this concept. Most have gone by the wayside because they quickly learn how hard it is to fill the games and make a living by it.
- When a tournament pops up in town and has games scheduled during our regular Hacker times, it adversely affects the club. When California Ice Productions comes to town on Memorial Day, I take a few days off.
- When even 10 core Hacker members, who play regular Hacker games, take the games off to play in a local tourney it hurts the club and me personally big time. Bigger then you may even realize. For instance if you do the math…the upcoming tourney this month will cost me personally over $2000. I lose that without doing a thing.
- AND to add insult to injury I was even asked by one of our club members last week to help him FILL HIS team. YIKES! He probably didn’t even realize how much this hurts me so I don’t blame him but that is why I am posting this now.
- BTW you as a Hacker member, get the great times we do because we commit to supporting Recreational Men’s hockey in the valley and have proven that to be. And we don’t cancel our ice times. We try to be straight up with the two rinks we play at and they respect us for that. If they allowed me to cancel my games to save some of my cost then they just have to turn around and find another group to fill the slot or they lose too!
- I tell you this so that you can realize that unless the rink runs the tourney, we all lose. The tourney we just finished at Ocean Side over the holidays was a great example of us working together with the rink so that everyone wins. In the case of the upcoming tourney at jobbing.com it’s really just a one-time cash grab for the organizers who are not committed to providing you with a weekly organized schedule like the incredible club we have created together. I just want you to consider if this is what YOU as a member of the Hacker Hockey Club want?
- Now the best Hacker games are when we have 20 skaters and 2 goalies. That has been our trademark. When 10 or more core players play in a tourney, we ALL suffer! Perhaps YOU could absorb such a loss but I can’t. I’m really saddened by this. And so should you be. This is YOUR club.
- It would be like me coming along and without consideration, taking $2000 out of YOUR monthly income and you not being able to do a thing about it!
- I know you have the freedom to choose what you want and I’m NOT trying to tell you otherwise. Just consider it. How much of this could you stand to lose if you were in my shoes?
- These tournament organizers and competing groups have made no such commitment to valley Adult Hockey! They are in it for personal gain. Why let them get away with it? Send them a message today by NOT participating and if you want another tourney then let’s do it together where we both win. You, me and the rinks.
- You are all great guys and we have enjoyed your commitment over the years. Most of us, if not all of us, would be lost if Hacker were to disappear. We’d like Hacker to continue for another 10 years!
